TO ACT OR NOT TO ACT???
Now that's a silly question, isn't it?
It's been the year of a lot of changes in the Richfield Lutheran Youth Theatre Company. Formerly dubbed "Christian Kids on Stage (CKOS)", this community theater company made its debut a decade ago with a few little ditties written by the members of the congregation for a group of young people who loved theater. Slowly it began to evolve into a Wednesday evening program that produced two musicals each season and a variety of small skits and plays during the school year for youth and families. Their performances have played to a sold-out audience almost every night. The word is out; "This is good youth theater."
As the actors evolved into seasoned performers, so did the shows. In the past three seasons the CKOS group evolved into a theater company with two troupes performing on the Richfield Lutheran Community Theater stage. The Drama Delights is a place for preschoolers through 4th graders to "get bit by the acting bug" as they learn technique and performance for the younger age actor. The Main Stage Players has produced several full length musicals and plays in the past few seasons including "Give My Regards to Broadway", "The Best Christmas Pageant Ever", "Bah Humbug", "Annie Jr", and most recently, two full length adult-based musicals; "CLUE the Musical", "Bye Bye Birdie." "A Charlie Brown Christmas," "Believe - the Musical," "We Are The World" and the inspirational rendition (set in an abandoned theater) of "Godspell."
In our 12th season, RELC started with an encore performance of the timeless classic, "The Best Christmas Pageant Ever", followed by a winter mystery theater option and, in the Spring of 2012, "The Wizard of Oz" came to life for five sold-out performances. Our set design, lighting and FX's were amazing and really stole the show. That and our very tall wicked witch who was over 7 1/2 feet tall with shoes and hat! Last season we did the Broadway musical Rock Nativity in December, a radio Mystery Pla in February and finished with Disney's Aladdin Jr - the Musical - complete with a life size elephant for Prince Ali to parade in on!
So much theater, so little time!
And a new adventure in RELC theater happened February 2014 with the addition of Winter Theater - a fun-raising performance weekend to support the many needs of the physical theater space and equipment that includes a cast of high schoolers and adults in a fun show. This winter is "Sealed for Freshness - an adventure in Tupperware.
Bah Humbug - Scrooge's Christmas Carol - December 13-15
Sealed for Freshess - January or February still TBD 2014
